State-of-the-Art Activation Code Development

Line graphs of specific activity and decay heat vs. time after shutdown.

Specific activity and decay heat for first wall made of various structural materials: ferritic steel, vanadium alloy, tungsten alloy, and silicon carbide

For many years, we pioneered the development of pulsed activation codes  (such as DKR-Pulsar and ALARA) that take into account a realistic operation history, pulsing mode, and in-chamber/ex-chamber residence times for flowing breeders/coolants. Annual scheduled maintenance intervals that can range from one to three months also impose an intermittent irradiation structure on both MFE and IFE power plants. Our activation work has been recognized both nationally and internationally to the extent that other research groups in the U.S. and abroad have adopted our pulsed activation methods or otherwise have modified their codes or calculational procedures along similar lines. Our newest state-of-the-art activation code ALARA has been developed with the end user in mind. The code is user-friendly and contains the newest algorithms for exact modeling of pulsed/intermittent operation within IFE and MFE systems. We are currently the only U.S. research institution that is actively involved in the further development of U.S. fusion activation codes.
