The conversion of microwave radiation directly to electricity has also been accomplished experimentally as evidenced by a spectacular experiment in Canada [see W.C. Brown, "History and Status of Beamed Power Technology and Applications at 2.45 GHz," page 171 in Second Beamed Space-Power Workshop, NASA Conference Publication 3037 (1989)]. The overall efficiencies of fission and fusion reactors are given here with fusion systems using direct conversion clearly favored.
