MFE & IFE Studies UW Neutronics Center of Excellence Inertial Electrostatic Confinement Shock Tube
Shock Tube
A shock tube has been fabricated for the study of shock-cylinder interactions,
capable of withstanding a 20 MPa pressure load.
The driven section can be evacuated to produce
extremely large Mach number shocks approaching the
strengths anticipated in future IFE (Inertial Fusion Energy)
devices.
A hydrodynamic issue in ICF (Inertial Confinement Fusion) that is
suitable numerically and experimentally for study within a
shock tube is the removal of energy and protection of the first
structural wall in future designs of reactors.
Additionally, water-cooled molten SnLi and PbLi eutectic
alloys are being considered as liquid blanket materials
for nuclear fusion applications. Thus, it is important
to understand the interactions that might occur if these
alloys were inadvertently to contact liquid water.
Experiments have been conducted with the molten alloys
when impacted with a vertical 2.4 m tall column of water at 30 C.
