TABLE 1. Pre-Apollo model of lunar evolution

1. Formation of an old highly cratered crust, rich in Ca and Al, on a generally chondritic interior.

2. Excavation of large circular impact basins, the younger ones with underlying mass concentrations.

3. Floors of many highland basins covered by light coiored smooth plains.

4. Most large basins on the near side partially filled by basaltic lava flows (mare).

5. Post-mare iunar surfaces slightly modified by formation of constructional volcanic deposits, dark mantling materials, faults, rilles, and light-colored swirls.

6. Pulverized rock debris, or regolith, formed on all surfaces in response to meteoritic bombardment and radiation.
